Answer

Refer to the  online guide on library status codes for a full list of status.

If the item status , is given as On holdshelf or On holdshelf + N holds , the item has been reserved by someone and is at the loans desk waiting for him to collect it. If you want it, you can place a hold on the item and be put next on the queue to borrow it if not the book is out, or if the status is available, you can go to the desk to ask for it.

There is a special class of materials where the location codes (not just status) end with Holdshelf e.g SC HoldShelf. These are items called short term loan items that are very popular and as such are moved to the loans desk of the respective library for safe-keeping rather than being placed on the open-shelves. They tend to have shorter than usual loan periods (typically 7 days).

Some examples.

Similar to the other items, you will have to place a hold on the item to request for it if it is out, or go to the desk to collect it the status is available. For more details.
