Gold open access means that the final published version of the paper (i.e. usually in PDF format) is made freely available for public access by the publisher.

Authors can make their papers available via the gold open access way by submitting their papers to an open access journal (e.g. PLoS, BioMed Central). Depending on the business model of the open access journal, article processing charges (APCs) may be charged to the author or to his/her institution for publishing the papers.
